Claude usage and plan limits

See what your Claude sessions use, by project and worktree, and let Mooring wind sessions down before a plan limit and restart each session after the limit resets.

The status bar

On a Claude plan, the start of the status bar shows what's left of your current 5-hour window, for example 5h 18% left · 2h. It turns amber from 80% used and red at 100%. Point at it to see when the window resets and how much of the week you've used. Click it to open the Claude Usage window.

The Claude Usage window

To open it, choose Window ▸ Claude Usage, or click the usage bar in the status bar.

Use the toolbar to choose:

  • Project: All projects, or one project.
  • Range: 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
  • Plan Usage on claude.ai opens your plan's own usage page in your browser.

On a Claude plan, the left of the window shows your plan: the current session, this week, extra usage, and the limits you've reached. Each week says when you'd reach the limit at your current pace. These figures come from Anthropic.

The right of the window shows your usage on this Mac, counted from Claude Code's logs:

  • API price. What your usage would cost at Anthropic's API prices, and whether your plan covered it. This is an estimate, marked ≈, not your bill.
  • Tokens and price by kind. Point at a band to see what kind of token it is and its price per million tokens.
  • Where it went. A table of your projects and worktrees. Click a column heading to sort by it. Coxswain's use shows as its own line under each project.

Usage per worktree

While Claude is working in a worktree, its row in the sidebar shows a small dial with roughly what Claude is costing per hour, over the last hour. Point at the row to see the figures. Click the dial for more detail about that worktree.

Winding down before a plan limit

Cox watches your plan limits while Mooring is open. When a limit reaches your warning level, 98% at first, Cox asks whether to wind your working Claude sessions down. Each session finishes its step, writes a short note on how to pick up again, and stops. Stopped sessions don't use your plan.

When the limit resets, Mooring restarts the sessions a minute later, after checking the new figures. Each one picks up where it left off.

Mooring takes care with your sessions:

  • It never types into a session that is showing a permission prompt. That session shows Waiting for you, with a Stop It Now button.
  • It leaves alone a tab where you have started typing.
  • It only winds down sessions running in Mooring. Claude in Terminal, an editor or another computer keeps going.
  • A session that hit the limit before Mooring could wind it down restarts after the reset too.

Wind down now

To wind sessions down at any time, click Wind Down Now in the Claude Usage window, the status bar's usage menu, or a tab's menu.

Restart early or later

While sessions are stopped, the Claude Usage window counts down to the restart. Then:

  • Click Restart Now to restart the stopped sessions straight away.
  • Click the arrow beside Restart Now to choose when the sessions restart: when the limit resets, In 1 Hour, Tomorrow Morning, or Don't Restart Them.

A stopped tab's menu also offers Pick Up Where It Left Off. While a tab is still winding down, it offers Stop This Session Now.

A restart that falls due while Mooring is closed, or while your Mac is asleep, happens the next time Mooring opens or your Mac wakes.

Quitting near a limit

If Claude is working near a limit when you quit, the quit dialog adds Wind Down, Then Quit. Keep Running stays the default.

Settings ▸ Usage

  • Watch my plan limits turns all of this on or off. It is on at first.
  • Warn at sets the warning level, from 50% to 99%.
  • At the warning is Ask me first or Wind sessions down on their own.
  • When the limit lifts is Restart sessions on their own or Ask me first.

Mooring sends a notification when sessions have been wound down, a minute before an automatic restart, and when something needs you, if notifications are allowed for Mooring.
