Links in the terminal

Open web links, files and email addresses straight from the terminal with ⌘-click, or right-click a link to see everything you can do with it.

Claude and your tools print web addresses, file paths and email addresses all the time. Mooring turns them into links, so you can open one without copying it first.

Point at a link and Mooring underlines it. These count:

  • Web addresses, such as https://mooring.sh.
  • Email addresses.
  • Files and folders, such as ~/Projects/skiver/README.md or docs/setup.md. A path without a leading / or ~ counts from the terminal's current folder.

A path is a link only when the file or folder is on your Mac. So a path printed by another computer, for example over ssh, isn't underlined.

  • ⌘-click opens it. Web links, HTML files and Markdown files open in a Mooring tab. Anything else opens in its usual app, for example a picture in Preview or a folder in Finder. An email address starts a new message.
  • ⌥⌘-click always opens it in your default app, for example your web browser.

Hold ⌘ with the pointer on a link and the pointer turns into a hand, to show that a click will open it. While you point at a link, the status bar says ⌘-click to open in Mooring (or your default app) · right-click for actions.

Right-click a link, or Control-click it, to see its actions. The first one is what ⌘-click does.

  • A web link: Open in Mooring tab, Open in default browser and Copy link.
  • A Markdown file: Open in Mooring (rendered), Open in default app, Quick Look, Reveal in Finder and Copy path.
  • An HTML file: Open in Mooring tab, Open in default app, Quick Look, Reveal in Finder and Copy path.
  • Any other file: Open in default app, Quick Look, Reveal in Finder and Copy path.
  • A folder: Open in Finder and Copy path.
  • An email address: New message and Copy address.

The menu closes when you click elsewhere, scroll or type.

At first, a link's actions appear only when you right-click. To have them appear when you rest the pointer on a link:

  1. Open Settings ▸ Links.
  2. Under Show link actions, choose Automatically, after a short hover.
  3. Set how long to wait with the Popover delay slider, from 200 to 2000 ms. It starts at 500 ms.

Right-click still works either way.

In Settings ▸ Links, under Open links in:

  • Open web links and HTML files in a Mooring tab
  • Open Markdown links and files in a Mooring tab

Both are on at first. Turn one off and ⌘-click sends those links to your default app instead. These switches apply everywhere Mooring opens a link: the action menu, ⌘-click and the file tree.
